Hotel
The morning wakes us up with the sight of a fan on the ceiling, stylish bars (wrought iron) in the windows and a tiled floor (just like in a bathroom). A few geckos are waiting for us on the walls. Or maybe not at us, but at mosquitoes. Geckos do their job perfectly, you can see their full bellies. The room is large and stylish. It looks exactly like you would imagine a typical Mexican hotel. When we were going to bed, someone forgot to turn on the fan (there is no air conditioning here, after all, it was supposed to be cheap) and it is quite stuffy. It will be fun to go out on the town.
Our plane was 2 hours late. We only figured it out on the spot, because we slept through the whole journey, including waiting for the start. Traveling from Polish is very tiring. 2 hours flight to Amsterdam, another 2 waits at the airport and 11 hours flight to Mexico City. In economy class, there is not much legroom on long flights. Even if you sleep through the entire flight, you leave the plane tired and sore.
The town
The city is beautiful. Beautiful in the style of a colonial town of Central America. Low-rise buildings, houses with shabby facades. When crossing the street, you have to remember that here the right of way belongs to cars. Learning the rules of the road is quick and dangerous. If nothing runs you over in the first 5 minutes on the city streets, you will adapt to the new rules very quickly.
The focal point of most Mexican cities is the zocalo. That is, the main market. In Mérida, it divides the city into a part that is more tourist-friendly and the one where real Mexican life takes place. There, on the streets, they do not sell cheap souvenirs imported from China, but everyday objects. If you are not afraid to venture into the city, move forward. You will instantly fall in love with this city.
Today we do not have any special plans. We have to pick up the car (necessarily with air conditioning). Alamo rental, contrary to appearances, is a global brand. And tomorrow a trip west of the city (not the only such trip in Mexico). And now it’s just a wandering interrupted by several times applying a UV filter, visits to shops and local bars.
